    Omi Eko: Lagos commences €410 million inland waterway challenge on Lagos Lagoon

    The Lagos State Authorities on Friday launched the €410 million Omi Eko Challenge, a serious public inland waterways transportation initiative geared toward remodeling mobility throughout the Lagos Lagoon.

    The occasion, held on the 5 Cowries Terminal, LASWA Headquarters, Falomo, Ikoyi, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, who formally flagged off the challenge.

    The Omi Eko Challenge is being carried out by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on behalf of the Lagos State Authorities. Funding comes from a €360 million funding by way of the World Gateway Initiative, with contributions from the French Improvement Company (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Funding Financial institution (EIB).

    The monetary package deal features a €60 million grant from the EU, a €130 million backed mortgage from AFD, and a €170 million backed mortgage from EIB.

    “Lagos State has engaged within the OMI EKO challenge to develop mass public inland waterways transportation on the Lagos Lagoon. Applied by the Lagos Stage Waterways Authority (LASWA), this challenge will run from 2024 to 2030,” the challenge presentation learn.  

    “The entire challenge funding price is EUR 410 million. By way of the World Gateway Initiative, the Pal Improvement Company (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Funding Financial institution (EIB) have joined their efforts to help Lagos State’s initiative by investing a complete of EUR 360 million within the challenge. The monetary package deal features a EUR 60 million grant contribution from the European Union, a EUR 130 million backed mortgage from AFD, and a EUR 170 million backed mortgage from EIB,” it added. 

    The challenge is structured round two most important elements. The primary focuses on the development of inland waterways transport infrastructure and related amenities.

    It consists of growing 15 precedence ferry routes, channelizing, marking, and dredging 140 km of ferry channels, constructing 25 ferry terminals and jetties, putting in electrical charging stations for e-vessels, organising upkeep depots, and enhancing land connections with highway surfacing and small transport amenities linking to ferry terminals.

    The element additionally focuses on strengthening LASWA by means of institutional capability constructing and implementing a vessel business transition program to enhance governance and operational requirements for town’s ferry community.
