A tragic explosion brought on by a domestically made improvised explosive system (IED) has claimed six lives and left three others severely injured in Gwabro village, Tangaza Native Authorities Space of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred on Sunday throughout Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
In line with eyewitnesses, the victims have been strolling from Gwabro to the neighboring Zurmuku group after they inadvertently triggered the explosive system.
The blast, which occurred close to a safety outpost below a big tree near Zurmuku village, is believed to have been orchestrated by the infamous Lakurawa bandit group, which has been energetic in elements of Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Among the many casualties have been three girls who sustained extreme accidents and have been rushed to Tangaza Normal Hospital for therapy. The Tangaza Native Authorities Council has since stepped in to help the medical care of the survivors.
Confirming the incident, Alhaji Garzali Raka, Particular Adviser on Safety to the Tangaza Native Authorities Council, acknowledged that each one six deceased people have been buried in response to Islamic rites. “This can be a deeply saddening incident. We’re doing all we are able to to help the injured and keep safety within the space,” he stated.
The assault has heightened issues over the continued risk posed by armed bandit teams within the area. Residents have repeatedly reported the actions of Lakurawa bandits, whose violent operations have disrupted lives and displaced communities throughout northern Sokoto.
Native authorities have urged the general public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious actions, whereas safety businesses are being known as upon to accentuate surveillance and counter-insurgency operations within the area.
As households mourn their family members, the incident casts a somber shadow over what ought to have been a festive and peaceable spiritual vacation.
