Zulum: Reformed Almajiri System Will Help Tackle Boko Haram Threat

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has said that the improper teaching of Islamic studies played a significant role in the emergence of the Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

He made the remark while opening a summit on reforming the Almajiri Education System in Borno on Wednesday.

Zulum emphasized that the summit aims to address the challenges of the Almajiri education system, a traditional Islamic learning method prevalent across northern Nigeria.

To mitigate the negative impacts of the Almajiri education system, Zulum revealed that the Borno State Government has established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board, which has introduced a unified curriculum for Sangaya and Islamic schools.

“The Sangaya Reform is a great development and will give Almajiri a better chance in life, particularly through the integration of western education, vocational training, as well as numeracy and literacy skills into these centres, which are also known as Almajiri and Islamic schools,” Zulum said.

He further explained, “Distinguished guests and esteemed educationists, the government intends to streamline the informal and formal education systems to create quality integrated Sangaya schools for admission into colleges and universities.”

“This summit provides a platform for participants to discuss issues, share insights, and propose actionable solutions to the challenges faced by the Almajiri education system,” he added.
